The easiest way to achieve this is to password protect a directory (members for this demo) and put the web pages you want to protect into this directory.

When a user tries to navigate to a protected page, they will be prompted to login. After 3 tries, an error page will be displayed. The error page can contain information on how to become a member or whatever you want it to.
